Kizomba

Kizomba can be romantic, crazy, but also very sensual. It is danced in many different styles, and therefore everyone can find their own thing in it. :)

Kizomba – a Celebration from Angola

Kizomba originated in Angola, and its name comes from the Kimbundu language, meaning “celebration” or “party.” While the popular dance semba was danced already in the 1950s and 60s, the true emergence of kizomba as a distinct musical and dance genre happened in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Music – A Fusion of Semba and Zouk

Kizomba music evolved as a fusion of traditional Angolan semba rhythms and Caribbean zouk. It is slower, more melodic and romantic than semba, with a strong bass line and smooth rhythm. Eduardo Paim is widely credited as one of the main creators and early promoters of the kizomba music genre.

Dance – From Minimal Movements to a Global Language

Kizomba started off with a minimalist style – basic side steps and smooth walking. Over time, dancers, especially from Angola, brought more creativity into the movement, introducing steps like basic 3 and saídas (exits).

As the music evolved and fused with modern genres, new dance styles like Tarraxinha, Urban Kiz, and other contemporary interpretations of kizomba began to emerge.

Styles of Kizomba

  • Traditional / Classic Kizomba – The original style from Angola, focused on connection, rhythm, and natural body movement.
  • Urban Kiz – A modern European evolution influenced by pop, electronic music, and urban dance elements.
  • Fusion Kizomba – A blend of kizomba with other dance styles such as contemporary, tango, hip hop, or zouk.
  • Douceur – A soft, fluid, and highly musical dance style that emphasizes detail, partner connection, and deep musical interpretation. Often danced to smoother or experimental music, it's known for its elegance and precision.
  • Tarraxinha – A slow, intimate style based on isolation and rhythm, often danced to deep, minimal music.
  • Tarraxo – A modern dance style characterized by strong body control, musicality, and creativity. Tarraxo is today recognized as part of the kizomba umbrella.

Kizomba Today – Cultural Legacy and Global Dance

Kizomba is now considered a key part of Angola’s cultural heritage and one of the most beloved partner dances worldwide. Thanks to its sensuality, musical depth, and ability to connect people, it has spread throughout Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
